2016 yılından beri Koç Üniversitesi Mütevelli Heyet Başkanlığı görevini yürüten Sayın Ömer M. Koç, başkanlık görevini 18 Şubat 2019 günü yapılan Koç Üniversitesi Mütevelli Heyet toplantısında Mütevelli Heyet üyelerimizden Prof. Dr. Nur Yalman’a devretmiştir.

Kâr etmek söyle dursun, her sene Üniversiteye hatırı sayılır bağışlar yapılmaya devam etmekte, ülkemizin her köşesinden gelen çok yetenekli öğrencilerimize burslar dağıtılmaktadır.

————————– Dear Members of the Koç University Community,

In accordance with the decision made by Board of Trustees of Koç University on February 18th, 2019, I have taken over the chairmanship of the Board of Trustees of Koç University from Ömer M. Koç, who had performed his duties with great dedication and success.

Our University was established 25 years ago by the Koç family with the intention to help raise our beautiful country to the level of ‘contemporary civilisations’ as had been instructed to us by our greatly admired Founder of our Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. In accordance with this noble objective, more than one billion dollars have been invested in our University by the Koç family, the Vehbi Koç Foundation, the Koç Group of companies as well as a wide range of generous donors. Far from making profits, our University continues to receive considerable donations every year and provides ample scholarships to gifted students selected from all over Türkiye.

Together with the members of the Koç family, I too dedicated myself to the enhancing of this University 25 years ago. I served on the Board of Trustees and the Board of Advisors for many years during the Chairmanship of the truly visionary and creative Mr. Rahmi M. Koc . I also lectured at the University in my own field of Social Anthropology, giving courses on Asian cultures and religions as well as on the long, colourful and rich history of Turks in Central Asia, India, Iran and the Middle East.

My goal has always been to bring to Türkiye the knowledge and experience in social sciences and humanities that I acquired at some of the world’s leading universities. I have hoped to encourage our higher educational institutions towards global levels of science and education without delay. To this end, our Board of Advisors includes leading scientists and brilliant academics from the best institutions in the world.

Today, we witness Turkish scientists and academics attaining important achievements and significant global recognition. Their experiences and achievements will be reflected in Türkiye. We may expect that this process will be further amplified over the coming years. One fine example of this is the extraordinary research in physics and space sciences carried out at Stanford University by our esteemed and hardworking President Prof. Umran Inan.

We are well aware of difficult predicaments that Türkiye has overcome in the past. We have managed to triumph and advance our society in the face of adversities and hindrances, much to the admiration of many countries. Nonetheless, we recognize that Türkiye has a long way to go in many fields. These include culture, education, economy, human rights, and, in particular, women’s rights.

In 2017, a leading global assessment board ranked Koç University eighth in the world among relatively small universities. When one considers that the world’s leading technical university CalTech (California) is placed at the top of this short list, and that the legendary École Normale Supérieure (Paris), the school in which almost all French prime ministers have been educated, is number two on the list, one can appreciate the remarkable advancement of Koç University’s global ranking and success over the years.

It would be unfair not to mention the exceptionally dedicated efforts of our former presidents Prof. Seha Tiniç and Prof. Attila Aşkar who have contributed greatly to this success.

In accepting this demanding position, my goal is to contribute to the advancement of learning in our country and our University in every field of endeavor. We hope to turn this University into an institution that the world may look up to with admiration.

“I exist as long as my country exists,” had said Vehbi Koç. We will work with the same thoughts in mind. Together with our gifted student body and very distinguished faculty, we hope to achieve our high objectives in good time.

With sincere affection and regards to the valuable members of Koç University . . .
